A statement from Social Work England

A message from our chief executive Colum Conway to all social workers in response to the publication of the Office for National Statistics’ report on Coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths by occupation.

We are extremely saddened to learn that 21 social workers in England and Wales have died from COVID-19. Our thoughts are with their families, friends, colleagues and the people they supported.

From our conversations with frontline teams throughout the pandemic, we know that social workers are putting their own fears aside to continue their vital services. Whilst navigating their personal challenges of COVID-19 they have continued to protect the public. To do this, they have found innovative ways to practice and helped people to adapt to these new ways of working.

Working alongside health and social care colleagues, social workers have been at the forefront of keeping others safe, fighting selflessly against the pandemic through their day to day work. Their contribution is essential to society and on behalf of all of us at Social Work England, we thank all social workers for everything they are doing right now, and in the weeks and months ahead.
