What is the register?
Social work is a regulated profession. This means that to be able to practise as a social worker in England, individuals must be registered with Social Work England. Once registered, all social workers are listed on our public register.
The register is a statutory list of individual social workers who practise in England. It provides assurance that the people who practise as social workers in England have the right skills and qualifications and are capable of safe and effective practice.
Temporary registration – coronavirus
Due to exceptional circumstances, we've been given emergency powers by the UK government to allow us to invite previously registered social workers in England who have left the register since 18 March 2018 to return to practice should they wish to do so.
Temporary registration remains in place for as long as it is required during the pandemic. All those who have not renewed their registration for the registration year 2020 to 2021 will also now be given temporary registration status.
If your employee failed to renew their registration, they must apply to restore their registration as soon as possible. Your employee can continue to practise with a registration status of 'temporary registration - coronavirus' whilst we process their application to restore.
It is also important to note that temporary registration will only remain in place until we are advised that the emergency is over from the Secretary of State. Once this happens, all temporary registrations will end 14 days after the date we are notified. We are not able to advise when the temporary register will close.
Temporary registration status does not give your employee the same rights as full registration status and they can be removed from the register at any time. If a concern is raised about them that meets our triage test whilst they have temporary registration, they will automatically be removed without an investigation.
What each registration status means
Every social worker on our register has a registration status. Read more about what each registration status means.
