Raise a concern online

Raise a concern about a social worker

This page is for people who want to raise a concern about a social worker.

If your concern is not about a social worker, Social Work England will not be able to consider it. Other organisations may be able to help you.

You will need to follow a different process if you want to raise a concern about a social work course.

If you are a social worker and want to raise a concern about another social worker, you may want to raise this with your employer before contacting us. If the concern is very serious, please contact us as soon as possible.

What raising a concern means

Raising a concern about a social worker means giving us information about something a social worker did, or information about the social worker themselves.

Our role is to investigate concerns that are serious enough to call into question a social worker's fitness to practise.

To help you understand what we mean by 'fitness to practise' you may find it helpful to read our professional standards. The standards set out the requirements that we expect social workers to meet to be 'fit to practise'.

Some concerns cannot be considered by us and are best dealt with by the social worker's employer. You can read more about when to complain to an employer.

You can read about what happens after you’ve raised a concern.

You may want to read the guidance on how we use personal information when considering concerns.

How to raise a concern

If you would like to go ahead and raise a concern about a social worker with us, please select the option that applies to you.

I'm a member of the public

This is for members of the public, including people who want to raise concerns about their own experience with a social worker or who are acting on behalf of a friend or relative. You should also choose this option to raise a concern about a social work colleague if you are a social worker, or employed in the social work profession, or if you are a carer.

Click 'I'm a member of the public' to read more about what we can and cannot investigate and what information to include in your concern. After you have read this, you will be taken to the online form for members of the public.

I'm a manager or an employer

This is for managers and employers, including locum agencies, who want to raise a concern about a social worker employee.

Click 'I'm a manager or an employer' to read more about what we can and cannot investigate and what information to include in your concern. After you have read this, you will be taken to the online form for managers and employers.

I'm raising a concern on behalf of an organisation

This is for people who need to make a referral on behalf of an organisation. You may be working for the police or another health or social care regulator.

Click 'I'm raising a concern on behalf of an organisation' to read more about what we can and cannot investigate and what information to include in your referral. After you have read this, you will be taken to the online form for organisations.
