Our board is responsible for overseeing Social Work England’s regulatory functions.
Lord Patel of Bradford OBE
Lord Patel is chair of Social Work England. A qualified social worker, he worked in inner city Bradford and then established a number of third sector agencies working with those misusing drugs and those with mental health problems, later moving to academia working with a number of universities.
Colum is our chief executive. He is a registered social worker and previously led the Northern Ireland Social Care Council. He spent six years as chief executive of a not-for-profit providing care services across Ireland. Colum has worked in statutory family and child care services, early years policy, funding and service provision, and family systems support services.
Jonathan is Director of Policy – The Profession at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a trustee of the Science Council. He has worked in policy and strategy globally across several professional and regulatory bodies, and developed the regulatory framework for recognising press self-regulators following the Leveson Inquiry.
Ann Harris OBE CPFA
Ann is a chartered public sector financial accountant and has held senior civil service roles in finance and programme management. She was awarded an OBE in 2009 for her services to the Department of Work and Pensions. Ann was chair of The Pensions Advisory Service and was subsequently co-opted to be a non-executive director at the Money and Pensions Service. She chairs her local Citizens Advice Trustee Board.
Mark is chair of the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust. He is a digital technologist with extensive experience operating at board level for multinational business and public organisations. As chief technology and information officer, he led the digital transformation of Openreach (part of the BT Group).
Dr Andrew McCulloch
Dr Andrew McCulloch is the chair of GMC Services International, a board member of Healthwatch England and a freelance consultant in health and social care and international development. He has previously acted as chief executive of the Picker Institute Europe and the Mental Health Foundation.
Dr Helen Phillips
Dr Helen Phillips is chair of the board of the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Legal Services Board. She was the founding chief executive of Natural England, establishing the organisation as a new environmental regulator. She has strategic and operational experience across a range of bodies.
Baroness Tyler of Enfield
Baroness Tyler of Enfield (Claire Tyler) was previously chair of the board at the Children and Families Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), the largest employer of social workers in the country. Claire was also CEO of the national charity Relate and a senior civil servant at the Department for Education.
